Dave Dalton - LEGION

1. Possessed-Seven Churches; because they coined the phrase "Death Metal".
2. Celtic Frost-Morbid Tales; to me, they sounded like death metal before it had a name.
3. Celtic Frost-To Mega Therion; simply the heaviest shit ever!
4. Death-Scream Bloody Gore; for obvious reasons.
5. Obituary-Slowly We Rot; The only band to ever dethrone The Frost as my favorite!!
6. Suffocation-Jesus Wept demo; Those fuckers re-wrote the book and influenced millions!!
7. Immolation-Dawn of Possession; proof that you can go from being shit (their Rigormortis) to "the shit" with some hard work and dedication. No Forgiveness... still gives me goosebumps after all this time!!!
8. Morbid Angel-Altars of Madness; Influenced EVERYONE!!!
9. Carcass-Symphonies of Sickness; How many bands stole their schtick???? So many that they basically renounced Death Metal. Probably the most copied band in the history of the genre. You know you've hit on something good when everyone tries to steal it!!
10. Entombed-Left Hand Path; Best Death Metal guitar tone ever!! How many bands can you think of that tried to copy that tone: Dismember, At the Gates, Carnage, Grave...

Honorable Mentions:
At The Gates, Cannible Corpse (another band that everyone was influenced by),Sepultura, Destruction, Coroner, Vio-lence, Disincarnate...

Best Vocalist; John Tardy of Obituary. He actually sounds like he's dying when he sings. And his voice is practically "un-copiable"!!
Best Guitarist; Bill Steer of Carcass. He would also have to win most improved if there were category!
Best Bassist; Ross Dolan of Immolation. Just because he can sing his lyrics and play their fucked-up riffs all at the same time!!!
Best Drummer; Gene Fucking Hoagland of Strapping Young Lad has been and will always be my favorite drummer ever since the Dark Angel days. He is an amazing dude!! His work on Death's Individual Though Patterns still blows my mind!!!

Remember not to take all this too seriously, It's only my opinion!!!!

Matti Way (Disgorge/Cinerary/Liturgy) - Possibly the most guttural vocalist vocalist ever.  His performances on the first 2 Disgorge cds plus the underated Cinerary album are fucking amazing!
The Best Guitarist - Erik Lindmark (Deeds Of Flesh) - Deeds Of Flesh just consistently churn out brutal riffs one after the other but with more melody than most death metal bands can manage.
The Best Bass Player - Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) - The bass playing on the early CC albums in particular is phenomenal.
The Best Drummer - Jon Engman (Foetopsy/Brodequin/Liturgy) - No-one can blast like this guy! It has to be seen to be believed.

Robert Sullivan - DEAD HAVEN

The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal History
1.Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick, This is the album that I think the band really found their own unique sound.
2.Deicide - Legion, this was Deicide being the most creative in my opinion. After this they started to get more and more repetitive with each release.
3.Disincarnate - Dreams of the Carrion Kind, This one is just a classic, enough said.
4.Atheist - Piece of Time, Atheist was a very creative band, very progressive for their time and still to this day don't sound outdated.
5.Behemoth - Thelema.6, I think that Behemoth made a good choice changing from their older black metal style. They are definitely making their mark in Death Metal today.
6.Death - Human, One of my all time favorite bands and one of the most unique, this album is kind of the transition point for them between Death Metal and the more melodic and progressive stuff.
7.Possessed - Seven Churches, This is supposedly the first Death Metal album ever, along with Death's Scream Bloody Gore. This is another classic and I still listen to it often.
8.Gorguts - From Wisdom to Hate, I love this album, by far one of the best ones ever put out.
9.Vader - Revelations, Even though this is one of their later releases, I still think its the best thing they have put out. Very good album.
10.Immolation - Close to a World Below, This one just crushes. Immolation is another one of those bands that just has their own sound, instantly recognizable. Very creative.

The Best Vocalist - I can't choose just one. I think these are the best simply for their instantly recognizable voices. Peter Wiwczarek, Glen Benton, David Vincent, Chuck Shuldiner
The Best Guitarist - James Murphy, Chuck Shuldiner, simply because of the originality.
The Best Bass Player -I would have to say Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse.
The Best Drummer - Richard Christy - I think this guy is one of the best ever. Nothing more needs to be said.

The Best Bass Player - ?
The Best Drummer - Gene Hoglan

Freddie Vidales - INFUSION
1) Death - Individual Thought Patterns
I have always felt this way about this album, long before the passing of Chuck (R.I.P.).  This album contains my favorite bassist (Steve DiGiorgio) favorite guitarist (Andy La Rocque of King Diamond), favorite drummer (Gene Hoglan) and favorite song writer (Chuck Schuldiner).  The complexities of the music combined with lyrics which follow the mood of the music have created an album which drives me to be a better musician every time I listen to it.
2) Malevolent Creation – Retribution

This album combines musical technicality with riffs that make you want to reach over and smash the head of whomever is next to you for no reason whatsoever.  Brett’s vocals define "brutal."  Phil’s riffs could start a mosh pit at your mother’s funeral.
3) Obituary - Cause of Death
I truly believe that if you could play this album and pump the sound underground, the dead would rise.  There is no way to sit still while
listening to this.  The heavy-as-hell riffs of Trevor Peres and the atomic clock-like beats of Donald Tardy compliment each other in a way that....... I'll be back............................. O.K. sorry, I had to go listen to the album again.  As I was saying, in a way that would make you become addicted to this album.

4) Cynic – Focus
I think this album was made to communicate with other life forms because it seems to be too intelligent for most of us here on Earth.  Many many time changes, solos by guitar, bass, drums and the Chapman Stick, clean to distorted guitar riffs, and growling to eerily processed vocals make this album something that makes you question how good of a musician you think you really are.
5) Deicide – Serpents of the Light

If the late pope had heard this album before he died, he would have burned an inverted cross into his forehead on his deathbed.  The more you listen to this album, the more the messages of Glen Benton seep into your brain.  The music is so perfectly arranged that the lyrics penetrate your subconscious without you even knowing it.
6) Cannibal Corpse – The Bleeding
The heavy guitar with the half time drum beat and the ride cymbal make you want to get up and do something.  The lyrics tell you that that something is kill.
7) Sepultura – Arise
This album contains, what to me is, the number one all-time mosh riff of all mosh riffs.  Insert the CD, play track 2 (Dead Embryonic Cells) and advance 3 minutes and 34 seconds into the song.  If this is your first time hearing this, you may want to not be near anything of value because it will surely be destroyed by your fists once the steady drum beat kicks in.
8) Six Feet Under – Maximum Violence

Simple, straight-forward death metal.  Also contains a cover of Wrathchild by my favorite band of all time.
9) Morbid Angel – Domination
Listen to track 2 (Where the Slime Live).  It’s like lava.  It’s slow, powerful, and you can run all you want, but eventually, it will consume you.
10) Lamb of God – Ashes of the Wake

I haven’t really liked any new music in a while.  That is until I was on vacation and didn’t bring any CDs with me.  I needed something (other than the radio) to listen to, so I went to a store and purchased this CD because I had heard good things about it.  What I heard I can only describe as Slayer mating with Meshuggah and having a child, then naming that child Lamb of God.  If more new bands started sounding like this, I would keep listening to the radio after Howard Stern’s show ends.

Best Vocalist:  Brett Hoffman (formerly of Malevolent Creation) - Brett’s vocal style is to singing what distortion is to a guitar amp.
Best guitarist: Chuck Schuldiner - Being a great guitar player isn’t only being able to play well, but also write well.  Chuck, in my opinion, created death metal.  He didn’t just write songs, he engineered them.  He created complex riffs and somehow combined them so that they fit well together.  He set the standard that other bands would follow.
Best bass player:  Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) - He may as wells have been born with picks instead of fingers.  The first
time I saw Alex play (The Bleeding tour), it made me want to take bass lessons, even though I had already been playing for 6 years.
Best Drummer: Donald Tardy (Obituary) - He may not play a million miles an hour, no blast beats or 1000 beat per minute 32nd notes, but Donald magnifies the intensity of Obituary’s riffs. Each bass drum and snare is timed perfectly and hit with the right amount of
force to compliment the songs.

Drew Ruiz - MANIAS
The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal History
1.Slayer "Show no Mercy" for me the starting point
2.Exodus " Bonded by Blood" pure satanic hatred
3.Deicide "Deicide" no others can match the ferocity of this release
4.Cryptopsy "None so Vile" Technical & brutal
5.Celtic Frost "Morbid Tales"  Need I say anything?
6.Kreator "Flag of Hate" speed & thrash defined
7.Destruction "Sentence of Death" Chaotic thrash in its finest form
8.Carcass  "Symphonies of Sickness" Purveyors of death metal
9. Napalm Death & Terrorizer -  Death/Grind fathers!!
10.Spawn of Possesion "Cabinet" pure technical brutality
As you can see I go back to the days when we considered all the satanic thrash bands to be death metal. There is not enough time to deliberate & quantify this art.Tthese were just bands that came into my head, I have too many favorites..

Jason Thornson - FOGCRAWLER

Let me preface this by saying that it is impossible for me to name the ten best.  There are so many incredible death metal albums and their values to me are based on a multitude of things.  The following are some of the albums that have influenced me, influenced the genre itself, and they are all kick ass records.  These albums are in no particular order because they make the list for a variety of reasons.  Again, many of these I’ve included because of their influence on the genre in combination with their actual aesthetics.  Many of these bands’ earlier works were more influential than what I’ve listed, but less well conceived, so I’ve picked the albums that accomplish both.

1. Obituary – The End Complete

2. Morbid Angel – Covenant

3. Cannibal Corpse – The Bleeding

4. Death - Human

5. Broken Hope - Loathing

6. Napalm Death – Harmony Corruption (I know they’re grind, but you can’t deny their influence on the genre)

7. Deicide – Once Upon the Cross

8. Cryptopsy – None so Vile

9. Vile – Stench of the Deceased

10. Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten

The Best Vocalist -

John Tardy, Matti Way, Glen Benton, Mark “Barney” Greenway

The Best Guitarist - Muhammed Suicmez, Chuck Schuldiner, Trey Azagoth

The Best Bass Player - Alex Webster, Steve DiGiorgio, Eric Langois

The Best Drummer - this is a tough one: Pete Sandoval, Flo Mounier, Derek Roddy, the guys that played in Death from “Human” until the end - Sean Reinert and Gene Hoglan, and right now I’m digging Jordan Varela from Lust of Decay.  There are so many great drummers in this type of music.  I guess these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Todd Smith - GODKING

1. Death-Individual Thought Patterns
Chuck pretty much started death metal, and every Death album progressed and took the genre to new places. Death is probably my favorite band, and this album shows them at their height, its sick as hell technical death metal with great lyrics. Their later albums, while amazing, were beginning to sound too different to comfortably call death metal, but Individual Thought Patterns definitely is genre
defining for technical death metal. R.I.P. Evil Chuck!
2. Cannibal Corpse-Tomb of the Mutilated
Cannibal's gory approach is what most outsiders think of when they think of death metal. Their image and sound are totally definite of the genre, and this is a classic, personal favorite album of mine. Without Cannibal, there would be no gore metal, for better or for worse! With this album, they really found their sound.
3.Morbid Angel-Blessed are the Sick
Every Morbid Angel album kicks ass, but this one has it all, from their lightning fast almost punk sounding riffs to their ultra heavy low and slow crushing riffs, as well as Azagthoth's trademark insane fretwork. This album even showcases the brief acoustic and keyboard interludes and spiritual imagery of the band. Morbid Angel is definitely one of the greatest bands ever, and Blessed are the Sick gives the
listener a sample of everything they can do.
4.Deicide-Once Upon the Cross
This is honestly my favorite Deicide album. All the songs are strong and memorable, and the hooks are brutal yet catchy at the same time. I think, as an album, its their best effort.
5.Krisiun-Black Force Domain
Its fucking Krisiun, the fastest goddamn band on earth! The first time I heard this band I crapped my pants! Super satanic, super fast, super brutal, this band never loses its edge. I chose this particular album just because its their first, at least as far as I know. The riffs and solos blow my mind constantly. Their even better live, and they pretty much kill every other band I've seen live.
6. Vital Remains-Dechristianize
A classic album, the combination of brutality and melody, and insane leads and triplet blasting, make me thank satan for this band. They really hit on something amazing with this album, its almost 2 years old and I still listen to it at least 3 times a week. It never gets old.
7. Nile-In Their Darkened Shrines
Every Nile album kills, I just personally like this one the most. I think the others tend to drag in places, plus the production on this one is better.
Nile totally revitalized death metal, and helped usher in the new wave of brutal extreme death metal. This band is the shit. Plus, they give you a total package with lyrics and imagery, making their albums more interesting and special than they would be based solely
on the music. I appreciate that alot.
8. Necrophagist-Epitaph
While I like the music on Onset of Putrification better, the lyrics on that album are idiotic, and its a drum machine, no band. On Epitaph, the music is killer, the lyrics are good, and Necrophagist is a real band, as opposed to a one man project. This band redefines technical death metal, it is mind-numbingly complex and the work of true genius. The skill and vision it must have taken to pull this off are beyond
belief.
9. Prelude to Damnation-Infidel
Prelude was a local death metal band from my hometown of
Greenville, N.C. USA. They had a unique blend of technical death metal and songcraft that I have never heard anyone else resemble. They shredded throughout their songs, writing insanely technical and complex
movements based around their guitar wizardry that inspired everyone around here to take things to the next level. I only wish they could have made their mark and gotten somewhere before breaking up, and that the metal community at large could have had the chance
to hear them. They could have taken death metal in an amazing new direction.

10. Cryptopsy-None So Vile
Cryptopsy pretty much hand every other band their asses on a silver platter, and this album is my favorite by them. Their guitarists solo like madmen, it gives me chills how brutally good this band is. Lord Worm is an awesome vocalist and frontman(he fed me a nightcrawler when I saw them live, for fuck's sake!) and Cryptopsy are pretty much unstoppable, one of the best bands right now.

Best Guitarist - Paul Masvidal from Cynic
While some might not consider Cynic death metal, I do, although they definitely were doing a completely original take on the style. While there are a ton of insanely virtuosic death metal guitarists, Masvidal outplays most of them, and is such a versatile and mature, well rounded player, just look at his later projects. Yet the Death Human album proves he can helicopter with the best of them. Chuck's my guitar hero, but Paul has a technical edge over him and lots of other dudes, so I chose him. And as awesome as Trey Azagthoth is, I've never heard him play anything other than what he does with Morbid Angel, so I can't rate his versatility.

Best Bass Player - Steve DeGorgio - Sadus, Death
This was hard as bass is so overlooked in death metal. I chose Steve because he is super good and played on some classic death metal albums, and because he has a very distinct style that jumps out at the listener, which I haven't heard from many other bass players.

Best Drummer - Flo Mounier - Cryptopsy
This guy is the best. No one fucks with Flo. He is a drum god. Dave Suzuki from Vital Remains and the drummer from Krisiun were close seconds, but Flo can do anything, and often does in Cryptopsy, while the others mainly blast. Not that I mind, but Flo is more well rounded, at least as far as I can tell.

Best Vocalist - The Guy from Cattle Decapitation
He does awesome typical death metal vocals, low and high, and he also does shit that doesn't sound human. I don't know of anyone else that can make the sounds this dude makes. What's his name, anyway?

Mike – WITHERED

The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal History (in no particular order)

US
death metal scene
3. Grave - You'll Never See - For nothing more than turning me onto swedish
death. It's still in regular rotation for me.
4. Sepultura - Beneath The Remains - For taking strong heavy punk influences
like doom to a new level and fusing it with high speed metal
5. Weakling - self titled - they redefined and set the bar for american
black metal (I know it' not death but it needs to be here)
6. Brutal Truth - need to control
7. Entombed - Left Hand Path - Shouldn't have to say why this album rocks
8. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb Of The Mutilated - Set a milestone for gore metal
and was my first death metal CD ever (bought before I even had a CD player).
9. Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness - I just can't get enough of that
shit plus homemade weapons of that caliber are always a plus (I don't care
if they're black metal)
10. Obituary - slowly we rot - I just love that one

The Best Vocalist

Mike Morgan – HELL CHURCH

The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal History
1.  Death, Leprosy. Really, this marks a turning point between thrash and death.  Wicked fast riffs, plodding doom riffs, and excellent musicianship.
2.  The first 3 Morbid Angel albums.  Going where no band had gone before, and with as much aggression as anyone.
3.  Obituary, Cause of Death.  "Body Bag" gives me chills.
4.  Venom, Warhead.  Okay, this isn't death metal.  But listen to the 45rpm vinyl at 33 speed (slowed down), and you'll see why I liked it so much when I was a teenager.
5.  Disincarnate, Dreams of the Carrion Kind.  Technical death metal by one of the genre's great guitarists, James Murphy.  This is the type of album that holds my interest even after repeated listens (my cassette is worn out).
6.  Cannibal Corpse, The Bleeding.  Not as fast as the earlier CC albums, but more coherent, with well-written songs. A real sing-along pleasure.
7. Possessed, Beyond The Gates.  this is really thrash with deathly vocals.  One of my favorites.
8. Carcass, Symphonies of Sickness.  They were one of the first true death bands.  Blast beats, doom riffs, growling vocals, great solos, psychotic lyrics.  They set the standard for all who imitated.
9.  Infernal Majesty, None Shall Defy.  Again, this isn't quite death metal.  But the wickedness and brutality are hard to beat.  A lot of death metal bands sound like they're just going through the motions, and the singers sound bored.  But None Shall Defy is as intense as Reign in Blood, and blows the doors off most death metal bands.
10.  Suffocation, Human Waste.  Immolation, Dawn of Possession.  I like a lot of Deicide, too.  Hard to limit myself to 10 albums!

The Best Vocalist - John Tardy--the most distinctive voice of them all in death metal.
The Best Guitarist - James Murphy--for his leads and his songwriting.  I love his style and his command of the instrument.-

The Best Bass Player - Alex Webster.
The Best Drummer - Pete Sandoval.  He's the Lombardo of death metal.

Anthony Roark – HUMAN TAXIDERMY

1. Carcass - Heartwork
The perfect blend of melody and brutality. You could have virtually any taste in music and "Heartwork" will still draw you in, smash your ovaries, and then lull you to sleep.
2. Gorefest - Soul Survivor
Some people hate it, but I love it. Much like Carcass, this band "matured" from their first release to this one and by doing so I think they created one of the most rocking slabs of metal ever! In my opinion, the finest, most meaninfull guitar solos ever, are found on this release.
3. Napalm Death - Inside the Torn Apart
My idea of the perfect album. Entering the tail end of Napalm's more commercial era, "Inside the Torn Apart" manages to stay true to their sound while implementing more basic song structure. The  rhythm brought forth will cause the listener to loose control of their bodily functions.
4. Entombed - Wolverine Blues
Death and roll, or whatever you want to call it, this is simply a must listen for any metal fan.
5. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
With "Effigy..." a new definition of the word, extreme, was written. This is the holy grail when it comes to brutal metal. Unlike like most musical compositions, it truly stands the test of time and is just as relevant today as it was over a decade ago. Sweatpants and all.
6. Dying Fetus - Killing on Adrenaline
The sickest slam riffs mixed in with superb musicianship. This album will have your undivided attention from beginning to end. Be careful though, you may become addicted.
7. Gorguts - Obscura
One of those albums you either "get" or you don't. It took me a while to fully comprehend what was being unleashed upon my senses but when I did, I promptly built a shrine in the honor of Luc Lemays' musical genius. Its almost hard to believe the sounds on this album were created by actual instruments! The one word I would use to describe this album is, brilliance.
8. Cannibal Corpe - The Bleeding
The whole package is superb. The riffs are classic "Cannibal" not to mention the subject matter. This album belongs in every metal fanatic/serial killers' musical library.
9. Skinless - Forshadowing Our Demise
Groove that will bounce you around like a gorilla raping himself with a banana. Oh yeah, its pretty funny too.
10. Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
The production, the blasting, the symphonic pulverising, the corpse paint, the studded crotch pieces. What else do you need for a great album!?

The best vocalist: Mark "Barney" Greenway - Who else could pull off performing in those short shorts?
The best guitarist: Boudewijn Bonebakker from Gorefest - Could move a fraight train with his powerful guitar solos.
The best bass player: Steve DiGiorgio - If you can hang with Chuck Schuldiner then you must be "the man".
The best drummer: Kevin Talley, ex-Dying Fetus, currently in Chaimera - This guy is the real deal. If you have the pleasure of seeing
him perform live you know what I mean.
