DEATH METAL HISTORY part III of Metal
Side Webzine questionnaire
Cazz Grant CRUCIFIER
The Best Albums and
Demos in Death Metal History
1. Slayer "Hell Awaits"...What can
I say here? Well this album was a prime influence in my life not just in my
musical career. The songs on that LP really served my soul that deserved kick
that it needed. The cover, lyrics, production, and overall intensity set the
stage for Crucifier, Grand Belial's Key and all of my more noteworthy
endeavors. The song "Kill Again" is still my all-time favorite.
2. Iron Maiden "Piece of Mind"...I love about 90% of Maiden's work.
However, in 1983, at my "metal" rebirth, this was the album that was
the internal blueprint for my metal beginnings. Every aspect of
"Mind" was downloaded into my psyche and that served as my liftoff
point in heavy metal.
3. Possessed "Seven Churches"...Scared my parents, friends and
girlfriends. This released marked my baptism into Satanism. I was fifteen and
loved every note and scream on this slab of evil. All that I knew before this
LP was singing; and when Becerra let out that first bellow, forget it, I was
hooked.
4. Mercyful Fate "Don't Break the Oath"...No words can say what this
album means to me, and a million others I'm sure. The best metal album ever!
5. King Diamond "Abigail"...This album just does everything for me.
Mansion, Ghost and Horsemen...How perfect is the last solo in Horsemen, huh?
King's best work in the Diamond days no doubt. King is my favorite icon in
metal.
6. Black Sabbath "Born Again"...Ozzy and the Sabs are my number one
influence, but Born Again is my favorite Sab album. Gillian, although not my
bigger vocal inspiration, made this Sabbath album go right to the top of the
pile! Ozzy (my hero and main metal influence) couldn't have made this LP fly.
Iommi somehow invented 1993 riffs and concieved them 9 months
before this LP's release. Wonderful work!
7.
8. Bathory "Under the Sign of the Black Mark"...Although I love the
first two albums about as much as this one, I think "Sign" issued
more blasphemy and killer riffs for me. This entire LP is etched into my memory
forever. Crucifier covered "Massacre" a few time also back in the
day.
9. Agent Steel "Skeptics Apocalypse"...John Cyriis' vocals stood out
among the early scene. I loved how they coupled the speed with John's long
drawn-out high-pitched screams. To this day I try to hit John's long
screams karaoke style in my car!
10. Autopsy "Severed Survival"...Chris, my buddy, is one of my main
inspirations in death metal. He, and I are one of the few dudes let doing both
drums and vocals in this style of music; and for that I am proud. Autopsy made
me re-think death metal in the late eighties. While everyone was all Chuck-ing
it up, we were going more and more Underground with "Reefer" and the
boys! Hails to you guys, talk with you soon.
The Best Vocalist
- This is tough. Let me mention some of my runner's up, if you will: Pete
Steele (in Carnivore only, 'cause I ain'ts no fag!), David Vincent (before
Blessed), Cronos, Messiah, Midnight, Gere (Tankard), Ozzy, Mille, Dickinson,
Abbath, Ishahn, Don Doty, Craig Pillard, the dude from Tearstained is awesome,
Quorthon, Jack Gannon (in Hazarax), Larry Portelli (Blessed Death), Becerra,
Ron Royce, LG (only on Left Hand Path), the dude from Holocross (remember
them?), the dude from Labyrinth, Araya, Angelripper, Tom Phillips (While Heaven
Wept) and the list goes on and on. However I think that my favorite of all time
with King Diamond as a close second, Rob Halford!
The Best Guitarist
- I think that I am compelled to say Denner! I know that there are at least
twenty that I love, but Denner is probably my favorite. He encompasses all that
is metal guitar...emotion, power, longevity, talent, etc. I think Malmsteen,
Michael Angelo, Azagthoth, and the dude from Necrophagist follow Denner!
The Best Bass Player
- I love Ron Royce, but I think that the best would be Timmy "Dick"
Grabber. I love all of his work. Again, this kind of list is so difficult
because there are so many dudes that can be on the top...but to follow the
rules I'll say Tim Hansen!
The Best Drummer
- The Black Lourde of Crucifixion of course!!! Just kidding, I suck! This is
truly a difficult decision, and one that is close to my heart! I'll start this
by saying that I love the talent of these dudes...Sandoval, Witchhunter,
Abaddon, Trym, Hellhammer, Aldridge, McBrain, Ruzz, Ward, Lombardo (my fucking
hero!!!) and Appice. But even being torn about this choice, it is a close one
between Lombardo and, the fucking man, Mike Sus!!!! He totally did some crazy
stuff and it really helped to form my playing. Lombardo really mainly
influenced me, but Sus gave me that oomph to really push forward and play with
extreme values!
Thanks so much for including me in this
survey, please let me know if I did it all right. Thanks and please support
Crucifier!!!!
TOXIC HOLOCAUST
The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal
History
1. Possessed - "Seven Churches"
2. Onslaught - "Power from Hell"
3. Death - demos (all)
4. NunSlaughter - "Ritual of Darkness" demo
5. Blasphemy - "Fallen Angel of Doom"
6. Hellhammer - "Apocalptic Raids"
7. Vomitor - "Bleeding the Priest"
8. Voor - "Evil Metal" demo
9. Massacre - demos
10. NunSlaughter - "Rotting Christ" demo
The Best Vocalist - Jeff Becerra
The Best Guitarist -Mike Torrao
The Best Bass Player -Jeff Becerra
The Best Drummer -Mike Sus
Ryan McAtee UNDER EDEN
1. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
2. Carcass - Heartwork
3. In Flames - Whoracle
4. Darkane - Rusted Angel
5. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
The Best Vocalist - Jeff Walker (Carcass)
Walker's voice was immediately
indentifiable, and for me really sums up what death metal vocals are all
about! Along with John Tardy from Obituary, Jeff Walker introduced me to
the infamous death metal growl.
The Best Guitarist - Chuck Schuldiner (Death)
Chuck started out brutal, and added
technicality and melody to Death without taking away the overall
intensity. People who joke that metal is just about power chords and
unintelligent lyrics clearly never listened to Chuck. He didn't just come
up with cool riffs, he made amazing arrangements that demanded superhuman
musicianship from the various Death members.
The Best Bass Player - Steve DiGiorgio (Death/Sadus/etc.)
There are a lot of great, underrated metal
bassists out there, but I don't think any of them bring as much to a song as
Steve. It's not just about holding down a rhythm or being
"heavy" with his style, but about adding that perfect secret
ingredient to the song.
The Best Drummer - Henry Ranta (ex-Soilwork)
There are so many amazing drummers in
metal, and Henry Ranta rarely seems to get mentioned. The first time I heard
him was on The Chainheart Machine, and I was blown away. Even when
Soilwork started drifting away from death metal, his drumming stayed
intense. His playing is technical without being disjointed, and he is one
of the few drummers whose playing is "musical" rather than just fast.
TESTICULAR DEFIBRILLATION
I know that people will most likely put
DEATH in their lists, but for me, I
never listened to much of DEATH... This is not necessarily THE best
albums that came out, but for me, they were my favorites and displayed the
many different sides of death metal for
me. Hails to Possessed... I still slam their Seven Churches disc every once and
a while!
Here's a list from a grind-head... most people will disagree with me, but I
loved all the bands here!
The Best Albums and Demos in Death Metal History
10. Repulsion - Horrified
"What the hell is that?" was my first response to this album... as it
was filthy, putrid and horrid sounding. It didn't get much dirtier than this,
except when I was caught in my bedroom fisting myself into an old tubesock over
a ragged Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition... by my brother. I think his
response was quite similar to the one above.
9. Napalm Death - Scum
Here's a tough one... kinda like a 250 lb. San Francisco bull-dyke defendin'
her bitch... do you go with ND or Terrorizer "World Downfall?" I went
with ND because they started GRINDCORE! So delicious, so tasty... and the fact
that they are still kicking major ass today, well that's a testament to the
power of the core. Now if Barney could just stop singing clean, we could all
sleep a little better at night!
8. Carnage - Dark Recollections
When I was younger... this band had me praying to Jesus Christ every night so
that the 'dragon voice' wouldn't come get me. The first time I heard harmonized
vocals... and super evil harmonies... this album was more hellish than my
bathroom was after my father's 'coffee-and-a-bagel' morning shits. This album
still gets two blazing horns from me, much to the chagrin of church officials everywhere.
7. Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses
This was without a doubt, the best sounding example of grindcore I had ever
heard. All the anger of grind with an excellent production and killer jap
screams from Mr. Lilker... wow. I accidentally punched a girl in the back of
the head while riding the bus one day because of the song, "Birth of
Ignorance." We later dated, had several makeout sessions and eventually
had sex. She was the first girl to demonstrate the "Union of Man and Cow"
position with me... thank god for seniors!
6. Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Perhaps one of the most recognizable voices in death metal history... and song
structures/tempos that have been copied by many others since. John Tardy and
Co. gave us that lead-heavy sound with some of the weirdest tortured vocals
ever... AND in the movie "Airheads" you can see an Obituary
sticker in the van they are driving during one scene... The only thing I ever
had in my van were some cans, dirty rags, various tools and a heroin addled
prostitute named Bubbles... Good times, good times!
5. Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
Damn these Brits could GRIND! And that memorable line.. WWWWOOOORRRRLLLLDDDD
EEEEEAAAATTTTTAAAAAAHHHHH... who could go wrong? AND they had a chick in the
band, Jo Bench (which brings me to the question, why do a majority of female
band members play bass?). This album gave all of us Warhammer 40K geeks a
reason to rebel against lunchroom bullies... and custom paint our very own
factions in our quest for power, glory and honor. I never wanted to join the
military so much as I did after listening to this
album... unfortunately, I started playing Dungeons & Dragons and later
determined that I would be much better suited as a staff wielding wizard with
+9 Necromancy spells.
4. Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction
GORE, GORE, GORE! What the fuck were they talking about? "Snorting the
stench of latent effluvium / And maturing damp fumes / This foul manage forces
tears to your eyes / As the corpse's gas are exhumed / Intoxicated by foul body
odours / And the nauseating tepid whiff / Pinching your nostrils as you
irrigate flatus / From the emaciated stiff" I'll tell you what... I never
looked at dead animals the same way ever again! *Hint, hint* Basically, take
the Kennedy assassination, mix it with Joan Rivers' undead, rotting corpse and
Michael Jackson's hacksawed face and voilα... goregrind!
3. Massacre - From Beyond
I know that many people will not agree on this one... but goddamn, do I love me
the old Massacre! I could have said Death, or Morbid Angel or Deicide...
Maybe I should have mentioned Disincarnate or any number of older, more
influential bands... but everytime I hear, "Corpsegrinder...
Corpsegrinder.... Corpsegrinder... GGGRRRRIIINNNNNDDD," I just feel the
need to be very belligerent towards the elderly. I'm talking pushing
wheelchairs down stairwells, deflating the tires on Mr. Sturners Rascal
Personal Transportation System, and cutting the brake lines on old Mrs.
Tanner's 87 Oldsmobile to make her trip to the local pharmacy just a wee-bit
more exciting. Flaming poop in a bag? Tis child's play next to the power of
MASSACRE!
2. Iniquity - Serenadium
I'll tell you what... you find me a heavier, more brutal yet melodic death
metal offering from '96 (one of the dark years of the 90's death metal era) and
I'll let you stick my sister in the ass with your AIDS cock. You can't... You
won't. This was the album that brought some renewed hope to the scene. The fact
that you could be more brutal than a silverback gorilla with chainsaws for arms
AND still maintain a sense of atmosphere and melody was unheard of at the time.
Like the young boys in Menudo, they have changed a lot over the years... but
unlike those no-talent, pre-pubescent hacks, they still kick some major ass.
1. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated
I was torn between this or "The Bleeding", but I decided that THIS is
THE album that demonstrates everything awesome about brutal death metal.
Inhuman growls, killer fret work, and blasting skinsmithing... this band gets
ripped off almost as much as Slayer does. Chris Barnes who has lately turned to
a life of homosexuality, was THE vocalist everyone in the scene looked up to at
the time. His, 'breathe into the mic" technique stunned me and many
others... and then they appeared in a major motion picture because Jim Carey
LOVED CC... that's awesome. Eventually they would lose Jack Owen (GODDAMN IT!)
but replace him with Rob Barrett (THANK GOD!) and Chris would later put out
such AMAZING classics as, "4:20" and "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise
Pollution," with his new band Six Inches of Anal Plunder...
The Best Vocalist
Joe Horvath, Circle of Dead Children... an ungodly range, and just a pure
marvel to witness live. Excellent vocalist.
The Best Guitarist
James Murphy... Took the shred from late 80's power/glam/speed and made it cool
in death metal.
The Best Bass Player
Alex Webster... The best finger plucker in the business of extreme metal.
The Best Drummer
The COMMANDO, Pete Sandoval... a freakin' legend, and still goin' strong!
Jason BYPRODUCT
1. Sepultura - Arise - this has to be one
of the best. It was THE album that turned me onto metal in the first place,
back then those kind of deep vocals werent around much at all, and Igor and Max
Cavalera, shit, it doesn't get any better than that...
2. Meshuggah - Chaosphere - Wow, what to say about this mind blowing and very
original band from Sweeden that you dont already know. All I can say is that
they are definately pushing the envelope for metal in an incredible direction
that just makes everyone else stand back in awe... Kudos to them.
3. Opeth - every album they have ever made, but if I had to choose one it would
be Deleverance - Opeth are just one of those bands that has so much finese and
perfection in thier musicanship that it leads to album after album of some of
the best metal I have ever listened to.
4. Pantera - CFH - I dont think I even need to say anything...
5. Slayer - South of Heaven - Dave Lombardo, nuff said...
6. Cephalic Carnage - Lucid Interval - These guys are sick as fuck! Check them
out if you havent heard of them yet. They are on Relapse Records.
7. Death - Human - ...fuckin DEATH!!!!
8. Slipknot - Slipknot - I dont care what anyone says, they have one of the
SICKEST drummers I have ever seen!
9. Goatwhore - Ben's (vocalist from Soilent Green) side project, and truly some
intense shit, they are on Rotten Records. We have had the privelage to open up
for them a number of times, and they blow me away evertime I see them..
10. Chaos Order - demo - Some local guys I know, got some tight stuff going on,
they are set to record soon with someone that worked with Pissing Razors in
Texas.
The Best Vocalist
-I personally like Max Cavalera's style, maybe because it resebles how it
sounds when I scream, but anyway, its fucking brutal!
The Best Guitarist
-This is a tricky one, because there are so many, but I guess I'm gonna have to
go with Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah. He is so fucking bad-ass, listen to
his solo album, ...just incredible.
The Best Bass Player
-I dont know, I usually dont pay to much attention to the bass, but the guy
from Byproduct is pretty good...
The Best Drummer
-Dave
Lombardo, ..nuff said.
Scott SKODAG
1. Carcass: Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
(perfect combination of melody and brutality,...the lyrics fucking rule too-
very medically technical and haughty but, with an underlying humor that
has been tried to be duplicated by a number of clone bands to no
avail)
2. Death: Human (i find earlier death albums to be
somewhat boring and simplistic but, with Human, chuck really lets his
creativity and technicallity shine...and he finally gets some good musicians to
play with too)
3. Gorguts: From Wisdom To Hatw (a lot of people think
Obscura is better but, the song writing on fwth is much more focused and
solid...i mean, behave thru mythos maybe the perfect song)
4. Morbid Angel: Blessed Are The Sick (i mean fucking
"vomit upon the cross and burn the book of lies"...this album is one
of the crown jewels of death metal...it'd be so much better though if they
eliminated all those stupid keyboard interludes...not only do they sound like
they were done on a Casio but, they ruin the flow of the album)
5. Malevolent Creation: Retribution (these guys don't
get enough respect in the genre in my opinion...i remember listening to only
slayer and megadeth back in the day until Luke from Antipathy played me
this beauty....i was instantly hooked...from start to finish this album never
lets up...the only thing that could make this any better is if Brett Hoffman
would shut the fuck up once in awhile)
6. Immolation: Closer To A World Below (when you hear
the title track come in...with that fucking drone...shit, it doesn't get any
heavier than that...it's a close call between this one and Here In After but, i
enjoy the production and songwriting on this one a little better)
7. Entombed: Left Hand Path (these guys gotta be on
the list somewhere,...i don't know...i just like this album a lot)
8. At The Gates: Slaughter Of The Soul (another great
combo between melody and heaviness...i mean, how many fucking bands have tried
to copy this album? These guys obviously did something right with this one)
9. Pig Destroyer: Prowler In The Yard (i might get
some shit for putting these guys on a list of best death metal albums but fuck
it....i love this album...from start to finish it's a wonderfully fast,
fucked-up grind, mind fuck....and it's three dudes with no bass so, fuck you)
10. Necrophagist: Onset Of Putrefaction (you know, i
think i like epitaph a little more than this one but, without onset there
wouldn't be an epitaph...this is a crowning achievement of
technicallity...Muhammed must of made a deal with some demon in order to play
this fast and clean...the guy's a fucking douche when it comes to technique)
Vocalist: Steve Tucker (i like him better than David
Vincent i don't care what anyone says)
Guitarist: Luc Lemay (his approach to the instrument
is totally bizarre...go to guitar.com and check out his lesson if you don;'t
know what i mean...his technique is totally original,...he uses the coolest
most fucked-up chord voicing i've ever heard...and his fucking tone doesn't
even have a lot of distortion in it yet, it's the heavist shit i've ever
heard....a pioneer of the genre and music in general)
Bass: Steve Digiorgio (if you don't know who this guy
is then you should kill yourself)
Drummer: Sean Reinhart (not only is he fast and
technical but, he throws in all these fucking little jazzy techniques
throughout his playing...some guys are faster and more precise but, this guy
has a natural fluidity and flavor to him that i've never heard in any
other drummer....he's not a machine, he's just a man)

Well the 10 albums that really did it for
me as far as DeathMetal goes old and new in no particular order,
Celtic Frost- Morbid Tales
Venom- Welcome to Hell
Slayer- Hell Awaits
Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness
" "- Blessed are the sick...
" "- Covenant
Deicide- Once Upon the Cross
Malevolent Creation- Eternal
Cannibal Corpse- The Bleeding
Suffocation- Pierced from Within
And of course many more. I could go on and
on!!!! But those really stuck out for me growing up!
The best Death Metal vocalist in my
opinion as far as just powerful and fuckin' brutal tone would be David
Vincent(Morbid Angel). In Covenant i think he pretty much set the stakes high for
alot of Death Metal vocalist.
The best Death Metal Bass player in my
opinion as far as amazing finger fretting and total speed and just total fuckin
talent in your face would be Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse). That dude is like
the Cliff Burton of Death Metal
The best Death Metal Drummer ever, hands
down, goes to Pete (Commando) Sandoval (Morbid Angel). The dude is inhuman! He
is by far the best. Often imitated, but never duplicated!
This is actually very hard for me, as a
guitarist i have many influences. But the 2 best Death Metal guitarists in my
opinion that i must put in front of the line would be Trey Azagthoth (Morbid
Angel) for his free style talent. And Chuck Schuldiner (Death)for bringing
guitar playing to a whole new different level for Death Metal. They are the
Death Metal guitar Gods ! R.I.P. Chuck S.
Different genres have and will come and go
,but Hail to Death/Black Metal for never dying out in the underground scene.
It's not going anywhere!!!
Horns and Beers up to all ! ! !

death metal, although he did play on a Death album, so i will say James Murphy
as best guitar soloist in death metal
The Best Bass Player
- Steve Digorgio of Death and Sadus, no question
The Best Drummer
- 3 way tie , but these are just my personal favorites, Flo, Dave Culros, and
Sein Reinert
Best demos: Internal Bleeding - Perpetual
Degradation and Mortal Decay - Sickening Erotic Fanaticism
AXE OF VENGEANCE
POSSESSED "Seven Churches" (That
shit coming out of your record player in 1985, nuff said),
DARK ANGEL "Darkness Decends"
(ripping as fuck),
DEATH "Scream Bloody Gore" (sick
horror music),
MORBID ANGEL "Altars of Madness (very
few bands can truly manipulate that sound today, Dark twisted chaos),
ATHEIST "Piece of Time" (pushing
the limits of metal, influential as fuck),
MONSTROSITY "Imperial Doom"
(underrated surely, scathing vocals, drums and guitar razor fuckin sharp),
GORGUTS "Erosion of Sanity" (a
stand out release from a stand out group, keys and wickedness ooze),
IMMOLATION "Here an After" (this
album tapped into another zone of extremity, unmatched),
CRYPTOPSY "None so Vile" (can't
say enough about this album, bludgeoning beyond belief, really influential
personally),
Last but not least KRISIUN
"APOCALYPTIC REVELATIONS" (absolute blast supremacy, everything comes
together to perfect for this album, a must have).
Ryan - EMPYREAN ECLIPSE
- Deicide- Legion: No band was writing
riffs like this at that time they came out. Really the first three albums were
like a trilogy of evil.
- Morbid Angel- Blessed Are The Sick: My favorite era was the
Azagthoth/Brunelle albums and this was more diverse than Altars... but still
had the Lovecraft themes.
- Entombed- Clandestine: It is now apparent that Nicke Anderson was the key to
this band and this album showed their best writing abilities along with a
better production than Left Hand Path. But, I have to admit I enjoy their other
works too.
- Dismember-Like an Ever flowing Stream: Almost a toss up between this and
Indecent and Obscene. ...Stream had a sinister mood to it and what I would
describe as the perfect Swedish Death Metal sound for my mind.
- Carcass- Necrotism...: The first thing that hooked me was the intros.
Experimentation paid off for them and no band has fully matched them at their
game yet.
- Vital Remains- Dawn Of Apocalypse: One of the only albums of more recent
times to catch me like the old ones. It had that classic DM feel and an evil
vibe. Killer Riffs!
- Immolation- Here In After: An amazing album that crushed with it's chaos and
impending doom. Showcased different song/riff structures than the typical bands
of that era. A unique band who has inspired many.
- Incantation- Diabolical Conquest: Mortal Throne Of Nazarene was awesome too,
but the lineup for this album had the perfect chemistry. Another album with a
very evil mood.
- Hypocrisy- Penetralia: At this time they kind of sounded like Deicide, which
intrigued me. I like all of Hypocrisy's work but this had that
"classic" DM feel and turned me onto their following works.
- God Dethroned- Bloody Blasphemy: They've got a cool sound and keep finding
ways to freshen up the older style. It also reminds me of good times so I think
there's some association from the memories.
It's hard to pick just ten but I had to
limit myself to what I mean "classic". And my choices would probably
change a bit if I did this in a month. We were inspired by many things at those
times of our lives and I hate to leave out bands like Cannibal Corpse, Napalm
Death, the bands featured on the Traces of Death Soundtracks as well as the
Nuclear Blast, Road Runner, and Relapse rosters. All were very important to us
during the nineties.
As for my favorite musicians, the list is
as follows:
Vocalist- Glen Benton: In the beginning,
his vocal structures/patterns were so cool. And his harmonization were
unmatched at that time.
Guitarist- Trey Azagthoth: Where does he come up with some of those things he does?
Another innovator, he truly set the par for what crazy, chaotic, Death Metal
guitar should sound like.
Bassist- Alex Webster: This guy is playing stuff on the bass that lead
guitarists would try to fit in over riffs. And still going strong at that.
Drummer- Craig Smilowski: He was the perfect guy for Immolations' chaotic
sound. the fills and timings were of the wall. Unfortunately, he doesn't get enough
praises.
